Euphorbia atropurpurea (purple spurge) is a succulent small tree or shrub, reaches heights of up to two meters and grows endemically (only there) on Tenerife.

Sowing instructions

The seeds can be soaked in water for a few hours before sowing. However, they also germinate without this treatment.

Euphorbia atropurpurea is a dark germinator, the sowing depth should be about one centimeter.

I used a mixture of peat-free herb soil and bird sand as substrate.

Euphorbia atropurpurea seeds germinate
The first seeds germinated four weeks after sowing.

It took about four weeks at 23 to 28 °C for the first seeds to germinate.

The substrate should be kept evenly moist and must not dry out.

Euphorbia atropurpurea seedlings
Seedlings of Euphorbia atropurpurea about eight weeks after sowing.

Once the seedlings reached a height of five centimetres, I repotted them in mineral substrate. In a mix based on pumice gravel.
