The sun spurge (Euphorbia helioscopia) and the petty spurge (Euphorbia peplus) look confusingly similar. But only at first glance, because there are some differences.
Differences
Euphorbia helioscopia (sun spurge) grows up to 40 centimetres high and does not branch out quite as much as Euphorbia peplus (petty spurge), which can only reach heights of up to 30 centimetres.
Compared to Euphorbia helioscopia, whose leaves, flowers and fruits are significantly larger, Euphorbia peplus has a more filigree appearance.
The stems of the sun spurge are often, but not always, leafless in the lower part.
The edges of the leaves are a reliable feature in distinguishing the two species. They are smooth on Euphorbia peplus and toothed on Euphorbia helioscopia.

Similarities
Both spurges are annuals or overwintering annuals. Their sap is milky and poisonous.
