The busy lizy is related to Impatiens glandulifera, which is invasive in Europe and North America. There are many cultivars of this plant, native to tropical Africa, with single and double flowers.
Impatiens walleriana grows as a perennial, but is often only cultivated as an annual, as a bedding plant or on the balcony. It is well suited for use as a houseplant, as it can cope with little light and thrives in semi-shady locations.

Sowing instructions
Impatiens walleriana can be grown from seed all year round. If it is to be planted on the balcony or in a bed, pre-cultivation can be started in March.
Impatiens walleriana is a light germinator; its seeds are simply placed on the substrate and pressed down. To prevent them from drying out, the pot must be covered or placed in a indoor greenhouse.
Temperatures between 68 to 86 °F (20 and 30 °C) are optimal for germination. At around 77 °F (25 °C), the first cotyledons appear after just one week.
A special seed mix can, but does not have to, be used as a substrate. Mixtures for herbs, vegetables, balcony plants or houseplants are also suitable.
The location for germination and cultivation can be light to partially shaded. When the seedlings have reached a height of at least five centimetres, they can be slowly acclimatized to the sun.
