Chelidonium majus seeds

Greater celandine, tetterwort

Chelidonium majus can grow up to 70 centimeters high. This member of the poppy family usually grows as a biennial, but sometimes also as a perennial, in which case, according to my observations, it does not get very old.

Sowing instructions

Chelidonium majus can be sown in a pot indoors in Central Europe from March or directly into a bed or balcony box in April.

Greater celandine is a light germinator, the seeds are only sown on the substrate, but are not covered with it. I used a mix of peat-free herb soil and bird sand.

The seeds of Chelidonium majus are only placed on the soil.

The soil should be slightly moist but not dripping wet. To prevent the seeds from drying out, I like to use glass jars for growing light germinators.

The seeds can be soaked for a few hours before sowing, but they also germinate well without this pre-treatment. At 18 to 24 °C, the first cotyledons may appear after two weeks.

Indoor locations for germination and cultivation can be bright to partly sunny, with morning or evening sun.
