Oxalis vulcanicola – plant care

Volcanic sorrel, velvet oxalis, spiral sorrel

Oxalis vulcanicola is a member of the wood-sorrel family native to Central America, of which several colorful-leaved cultivars are available. One example is Oxalis vulcanicola “Plum Crazy” with its pink and dark red variegated leaves. It is also well suited for growing as a houseplant.

Oxalis vulcanicola Plum Crazy
This specimen of Oxalis vulcanicola “Plum Crazy” is in a semi-shaded location with a maximum of 30 minutes of indirect morning sun. As a result, only the leaves facing the window have turned an intense dark red-pink color.

Plant care

Location & temperature

Partial sun to partial shade with morning sun, evening sun, and winter sun.

The variegated varieties need a little sun if their leaves are to develop intense colors. Locations with morning sun, late afternoon sun, and winter sun are ideal for them. They can tolerate the hot summer sun if the pot is not placed directly behind the window.

Volcanic sorrel also copes well with partial shade. It can spend the summer on the balcony or in the garden.

Substrate

Semi-mineral with pumice gravel, lava gravel, herb soil, vegetable soil.

I use a mixture of herb soil, bird sand, and pumice gravel. Firstly, because I don’t want the volcanic sorrel to grow too large. And secondly, because mineral substrates are less likely to be colonized by fungus gnats.

Purely organic mixtures such as herb soil, vegetable soil, or classic potting soil are also suitable.

Watering

Allow to dry out moderately.

The pot ball should always be slightly moist. It may dry out on the surface but should not dry out completely.

Fertilizing

Occasionally from spring to early fall.

As already mentioned, I do not want Oxalis vulcanicola to grow rampantly. That is why I fertilize sparingly and water with aquarium water, which also contains some nutrients. In addition, I apply liquid fertilizer in spring and summer — when I remember to do so.

Oxalis vulcanicola red laeves
I found this red-leaved cultivar of Oxalis vulcanicola years ago in the bargain bin of a garden center and cultivated it as a balcony plant.

Temperature

Room temperature all year round or temperate overwintering.

It can be overwintered at room temperature or temperate between 50 and 59 °F (10 and 15 °C). Volcanic sorrel does not tolerate frost.

Propagation

Oxalis vulcanicola can be propagated from seed; I have not been successful in propagating it from cuttings.
