Habitus & biology

Amaranthus deflexus often grows as an annual with flat or ascending (semi-erect) shoots that are between 20 and 60 centimeters long.

The leaves can be plain green or covered with brownish spots. Their edges are smooth.

In terms of leaf shape, Amaranthus deflexus is variable with triangular to diamond-shaped, pointedly oval to lanceolate leaves.

Distribution & habitates

The original distribution area is in southern South America (source). Amaranthus deflexus also occurs as a neophyte in some North American and other South American regions. It is also found in Africa, Europe, New Zealand, West Asia, Korea and Japan.

Amaranthus deflexus grows in urban areas in front of houses, along or on paths and at the side of roads. However, it also colonizes meadows, lawns, embankments, building sites and other ruderal areas.
