Fucus serratus

Toothed wrack, serrated wrack, saw wrack

Fucus serratus belongs to the brown algae (Phaeophyceae) and is not a plant. It colonizes the North Sea and Baltic Sea as well as the Atlantic. I discovered the specimens shown here on the Atlantic in Brittany. Its thallus can grow up to 30 centimetres long and is serrated at the edge.

It can be distinguished from the closely related Fucus vesiculosus, with which it can be found together, by the serrated edge of the thallus and the absence of gas bubbles.
