Depending on its location, Echinops sphaerocephalus grows to a height of between 60 and 200 centimeters and can be annual, biennial, or perennial. All parts of the plant are covered with fine hairs, and the stems may have a reddish tint.

In English-speaking countries (the UK and the U.S.), the flowering season extends from June through September, and in warmer regions of the U.S., it can last until October.

Its natural range extends from southern Europe to Central Asia. In the United States and the United Kingdom, Echinops sphaerocephalus is not a native species but was introduced as an ornamental plant. There, it grows in sunny locations such as roadsides, railroad tracks, and disturbed areas. As an ornamental perennial, it is planted in parks and gardens.
