Sowing instructions

Sowing indoors is possible all year round, a good time for direct sowing in the garden is from mid-April (in Central Europe). The seeds germinate best if they are soaked for about 24 hours and then briefly doused with boiling water. Scarification increases the germination rate.

Seedlings of common broom. I poured boiling water over the seeds in the bottom jar for a few seconds after soaking. The seeds in the top glass were not scarified.

Cytisus scoparius is a light germinator, the seeds are only placed on the substrate, they are not covered with it. I used a mix of peat-free herb soil and bird sand.

At 72 to 82 °F (22 to 28 °C), it takes about two weeks for the first seeds to germinate. It may take a few more weeks before they have all germinated.

The seeds of common broom germinate unevenly and it takes several weeks until they have all sprouted. To prevent them from drying out, I have germinated them in a preserving jar.

Until most of the seeds have germinated, a bright location is sufficient. The seedlings should then be slowly acclimatized to more and more sunlight.
