Bryonia dioica & Nezara viridula

Red bryony, southern green stink bug

Nezara viridula probably originates from Ethiopia and has spread to many regions as a crop follower. The southern green stink bug or southern green shield bug feeds on the sap of many agricultural plants.

The larvae (nymphs) are black in color, only the adult bugs turn green. There is also a red form and in autumn these insects can turn brown.

Based on my observations, the southern green stink bug is only occasionally found on the red bryony. Other plants seem to taste much better to it.
