How to grow Arum maculatum from seeds

Lords-and-ladies, wild arum, cuckoopint

Arum maculatum can be propagated by dividing the rhizome, but it takes a little longer to grow from seed. They only germinate after several weeks of cold treatment (“stratification”).

A good time for sowing in the garden is from autumn to early winter, as long as the soil is not yet frozen.

Sowing instructions

Sowing indoors is possible all year round, in which case cold treatment can be carried out in the refrigerator.

The seeds should be soaked for 12 to 24 hours before sowing.

Peat-free mixtures for herbs or vegetables are suitable as a substrate. I have used herb soil and added some bird sand to it.

The sowing depth should be one to two centimetres. Instead of a pot, I used a small preserving jar with a lid. This not only prevents the seeds and substrate from drying out. I also use glass jars for hygienic reasons when cold treatment is carried out in the fridge.

After sowing, I placed the jar on the balcony. From mid-January to mid-March, it was protected from the sun. It was then moved to a place with some afternoon sun.

This winter was not really cold, with occasional temperatures of one to two degrees below zero. The first seeds germinated at the beginning of April.
